Conway helps Red Bulls blank D.C. United

Jul 23, 2007 - 12:52 AM EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- John Wolyniec scored in the 19th minute and goalkeeper Jon Conway made a number of key saves as the New York Red Bulls beat rival D.C. United, 1-0, on Sunday.

The Red Bulls improved to 8-6-3 with the win.

It was the Red Bulls' first win at home over United since posting a 3-2 victory on April 17, 2004.

Wolyniec took a rebound from teammate Jozy Altidore off a free kick by Claudio Reyna and outjumped United defender Devon McTavish, heading the ball over the outstretched arms of United goalkeeper Troy Perkins for his third goal of the season.

"It was great ball by Claudio off the kick and a nice flick by Jozy," Wolyniec said. "I just took it and scored. Anytime you play at home you want to get points, and when you play within your division, you want to win. It wasn't a good performance, but we won."

It was Altidore's first game back for the New York after missing four games while playing in the FIFA Sub-20 World Cup for the USA, where he scored four goals. Without Altidore, the Red Bulls went 1-3.

D.C. United (7-6-3) had several chances to score the equalizer, first in the 38th minute when Bobby Boswell had two chances.

Boswell's header from a crossing pass into the goal box hit the left side of the crossbar, and on the rebound he missed an open net with a bicycle kick as Conway was out of position.

"D.C. United is our bitter conference rival and anytime you can beat them, it's big," said Conway, who recorded his third shutout of the season. "It was good effort and I got the job done. I made some good saves and it's important that we got some points today."

United's Nicholas Adderly and Christian Gomez also missed golden opportunities to put the ball into the net. After beating a Red Bulls defender into the box in the 56th minute, Adderly fired a shot from 12 yards out but Conway made a diving save.

"I was going to the right side of the goal but obviously I didn't catch it right and it went directly to the goalkeeper," Adderly said. "It definitely was not good enough. I think I definitely let the team down, it was definitely a clear goal-scoring opportunity."

Three minutes later, Gomez chipped one just over the crossbar.

D.C. United played without midfielder Ben Olsen, who is out due to five cautions through July 23. Olsen scored a hat trick in the first meeting between both teams, which United won, 4-2, at home in June.

The Red Bulls played without leading scorer and 2007 MLS All-Star MVP Juan Pablo Angel, who was out after getting booked with a red card for elbowing New England Revolution's Shalrie Joseph last weekend.
