Goodson tallies late goal to lead FC Dallas to win

Aug 12, 2007 - 4:32 AM FRISCO, Texas (Ticker) -- Clarence Goodson picked the perfect time to get his first goal of the season.

Goodson headed in the game-winner in the 92nd minute off a corner kick to help FC Dallas notch a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

Dax McCarty took the corner kick during injury time, and Goodson gathered it in the penalty area before beating goalkeeper Will Hesmer to snap a tie.

"I have to give a lot of credit to Dax (McCarty)," Goodson said. "He's been working some fantastic balls and every single cross has looked dangerous. "He's putting it in good areas and we're able to just go up and attack it. No matter where the ball goes in that six-yard area between the penalty spot and the six-yard box, he's putting great balls in and we're all over it."

"I thought he's been dangerous from set plays and in the last few games he's been getting his head on things, as well," FC Dallas coach Steve Morrow said. "He's been playing with a lot of confidence right now and his all-around game has been fantastic. He deserved the game-winner tonight."

Carlos Ruiz had scored the equalizer for Columbus in the 80th minute. In a back-and-forth contest, Ruiz took a through ball from Marcelo Sargosa and scored from inside the penalty area to knot the game at 2-2.

The goal by Ruiz helped bail out teammate Chris Gbandi, who pushed Frankie Hejduk in the box to draw a penalty kick. Andy Herron nailed the kick to put Columbus up, 2-1, in the 74th minute.

In an evenly played match, the Crew struck first by scoring off a corner kick in the sixth minute. Marcos Gonzalez gathered the ball on the right side of the penalty area and beat goalkeeper Ray Burse for a 1-0 lead.

Aturo Alvarez tied the game by blasting a left-footed shot from the left corner that found the right corner of the net in the 60th minute.

Burse made five saves for Dallas (11-6-3), which has won three straight. Hessman stopped five shots for Columbus (6-6-8), which dropped its second in a row.

"I think at times we played well early on in each half, but after that I thought we made a little bit of a mess of it," Columbus coach Sigi Schmid said. "Credit Dallas because they put a lot more energy into the game and their defense pushed up and kept things compact for them. We just didn't do a good job of holding on to the ball."
