Burling helps Chivas make winning start
Mar 9, 2014 - 9:02 PM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Bobby Burling helped Chivas USA make a bright start to the new MLS season by grabbing a late goal in the club's 3-2 defeat of the Chicago Fire at the StubHub Center on Sunday. After a dull first half, the proceedings picked up considerably following the halftime interval as the match exploded with four goals coming in the span of 14 minutes.
Erick Torres got the Goats off the mark in the 56th minute after he was brought down in the box by Gonzalo Segares, which allowed the 21-year-old to slot home the ensuing penalty.
The lead was doubled three minutes later following a well-worked move from the home side as Leandro Barrera's low cross was tucked home by rookie Thomas McNamara from close range.
Chicago made some adjustments, throwing on Benji Joya in the 63rd minute. The 20-year-old made an immediate impact in his MLS debut, turning in a rebound conceded by Dan Kennedy in the 64th minute to cut the Fire's deficit in half.
The equalizer came six minutes later when Quincy Amarikwa curled a superb shot around Kennedy and into the back of the net from the top of the penalty area.
The two sides remained level until the 88th minute when Burling got on the end of a corner kick to the back post to nod home the winner.
