Mexico aiming for world cup final spot
Jun 9, 2014 - 12:54 AM Giovani Dos Santos, one of the pillars of the Mexico team at the age of just 25, believes his team actually came out strengthened from a complicated qualifying group for the World Cup - and is now aiming for nothing less than a place in the final."What became obvious to us in the qualifying round is that no team is easy to beat these days, and that you have to work hard in matches to get good results," the Villarreal striker told German press agency dpa.
"Obviously this made us more united and today we know we are stronger than before," Mexico was on the brink of failing to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time in 24 years, and had to beat New Zealand in the play-offs in order to book their ticket to Brazil.
Dos Santos has faith that the group of players which won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London can turn in a historic performance at the World Cup.
"These are players who have a winning mentality thanks to having won different titles, like the Olympic gold medal and the Under-17 world championship (in Peru in 2005). This is a special generation," said Dos Santos, who is one of the 10 players from the 2012 triumph in the World Cup squad.
