Mexico's Moreno suffers broken leg against Dutch

Jul 10, 2014 - 1:24 AM Fortaleza, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Mexico defender Hector Moreno broke the tibia in his left leg on Sunday in El Tri's 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands in the round of 16 at the World Cup.

Moreno was injured at the end of the first half when he lunged in to make a challenge on Dutch winger Arjen Robben, who went down inside the penalty area amid claims for a spot kick.

The Espanyol man had to be taken off the field on a stretcher and he was replaced by Diego Reyes, while Mexico gave away late goals to Wesley Sneijder and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to be bounced from the tournament.

"Hector Moreno has suffered a fractured tibia in his left leg, the medical services of the Mexican national team have confirmed," a statement on Espanyol's official website read.

The injury now means that the 26-year-old will face a race to be fit for the start of Espanyol's La Liga campaign in August.
