Sounders hope to bounce back against Chivas

Sep 26, 2014 - 8:44 PM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle Sounders FC will be aiming to take another step toward the MLS Supporters' Shield when the club welcomes Chivas USA to CenturyLink Field on Saturday.

The Sounders took a major hit in their quest for the top overall finish in the regular season when they were handed a 3-1 defeat by FC Dallas.

It was Seattle's second straight defeat, dropping the club into a tie with the Los Angeles Galaxy for top spot in the Western Conference.

But with five games remaining, including a home-and-home series with the Galaxy to end the regular season, Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid is quite confident that his team can right the ship and claim their second piece of major silverware this term.

"Everything is still in our own hands. If we win our home games, we put ourselves in a very good situation. We have three home games still left out of five and the first one is Saturday and we have to be ready to win that one," Schmid told Seattle's official website after the loss to Dallas. "I'm confident in the group. We have a good group and we know that we can play better soccer than we did tonight."

The Sounders have conceded seven goals over their last two league games, underlining the need for Seattle to tidy up its defensive duties ahead of the final run-in.

"We have to be a little bit tougher," Schmid continued. "A little meaner. Maybe a little dirtier at times. I don't think we were tough enough at times so that's something that we have to address with ourselves."

Chivas, meanwhile, has struggled mightily in recent months, dropping 10 of its last 11 regular season games.

The Goats have tallied just two goals since their 3-1 defeat to D.C. United on July 20, both of which came in garbage time of a 4-2 home loss to Seattle.

But while Chivas has endured a humiliating stretch of results, goalkeeper Dan Kennedy believes that his side should be playing for pride from here on out.

"This is what we do; none of us should be short of motivation," Kennedy said. "Being positive, that's kind of what it takes. Unfortunately we're going through a tough stretch here and the only ones that are going to get us out of this is ourselves. We got to stick together and just continue to work and know that we can turn this thing around in one game."
