'Quakes tangle with 'Caps under lights at Avaya
Apr 10, 2015 - 8:36 PM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Jose Earthquakes will try to avoid losing back-to-back games at Avaya Stadium on Saturday when the club welcomes Vancouver Whitecaps FC to town. The Earthquakes sustained their first loss at Avaya last time out, dropping a 1-0 decision to Real Salt Lake on a fantastic strike from Javier Morales late in the first half.
And now with San Jose set to play its first home game under the lights at Avaya, the players will hope get an added boost from the atmosphere against one of the league's best teams.
"We're all excited to get out there," San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham said. "The night games are just different. I know it sounds cliche, but when you play under the lights you get that extra boost, especially when you have this beautiful new stadium."
Vancouver has not only gotten off to a great start this season, but the Canadian side also has a history of success against the 'Quakes with the Whitecaps having gone 5-0-3 in their last eight outings against San Jose.
The Whitecaps are hitting the road following a three-game homestand, which includes a 2-2 draw against Columbus on Wednesday night.
The result snapped a run of four straight wins for Carl Robinson's side, but the game saw Octavio Rivero continue his red-hot start with a league-leading fifth goal in six games.
Another positive for Robinson was that Darren Mattocks opened his 2015 account by scoring the equalizing goal in the 64th minute for the Crew after collecting an assist on Rivero's opening tally.
But Robinson knows the depth in his side will be tested a bit on Saturday after a quick turnaround from Wednesday night.
"I think I'll have to," Robinson said when asked if he intended to make any changes to his lineup from Wednesday's match. "I've got confidence in my squad so other players will get chances now. The ones that are banged up, and there might be some center backs that are banged up, will take a rest and others players will come in."
