Sounders' Martins named MLS Player of the Week
May 5, 2015 - 4:36 PM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle Sounders FC forward Obafemi Martins was named MLS Player of the Week on Tuesday for the ninth week of the 2015 season.Martin struck for a pair of goals and an assist on Sunday in Seattle's comfortable 3-1 rout of expansion side New York City FC at Yankee Stadium.
The Nigerian got the scoring started in the match, as he ran onto the end of Marco Pappa's nifty through ball and hit a shot past goalkeeper Josh Saunders in the 23rd minute to score his 30th career goal for Seattle.
Then, just before the hour mark, he set up Clint Dempsey's go-ahead goal with some tricky moves on the left flank to set up a cross into the box, before capping off his night with the insurance tally, blasting through NYCFC's defense to finish off an 18-pass sequence by the Sounders.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
