Red Bulls' Wright-Phillips named MLS Player of the Week
May 12, 2015 - 6:00 PM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips was named MLS Player of the Week on Tuesday for the tenth week of the 2015 season.Wright-Phillips hit for a pair of goals on Sunday in the first-ever meeting between the Red Bulls and New York City FC as the Red Bulls claimed a 2-1 win at Red Bull Arena.
Last season's Golden Boot winner notched the first goal in the New York derby's history in the fourth minute with some help from teammate Lloyd Sam. Sam received the ball just outside the area and sprinted towards the end line, then created space to pick out Wright-Phillips right in front of goal. Wright- Phillips effortlessly volleyed his shot past NYCFC goalkeeper Josh Saunders from close range.
Wright-Phillips then collected his second of the match seven minutes into the second half despite his side going down to 10 men in the latter stages of the first half.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
