Algerian midfielder joins Adelaide United
Aug 15, 2017 - 1:43 AM Adelaide United have locked in their fourth foreigner for the upcoming A-League season, signing French-born Algerian midfielder Karim Matmour. The 32-year-old has spent most of his career in Germany and is a versatile attacker who can play anywhere in the front half.
Matmour, capped 30 times for Algeria, joins United after stints with Kuwaiti side Al-Arabi, England's Huddersfield Town and 1860 Munich.
He made 275 appearances in Germany's top two divisions having also played for SC Freiburg, Borussia Monchengladbach, Eintracht Frankfurt and Kaiserslautern.
He said he was convinced to make the move to the A-League after speaking with Jason Davidson, the former Socceroos defender who he played with at Huddersfield.
Matmour is also already acquainted with new Adelaide boss Marco Kurz.
"I know Marco from Germany and he has a very big reputation and is a very good coach," he said.
"He has a good style and good ideas for football and that's why for me this a good combination."
Kurz hailed Matmour's recruitment, describing him as a quick, technical player who will set up goals for others.
"We have secured an excellent player with a great personality and someone who will be an asset to the team," Kurz said.
Matmour joins Baba Diawarra, Johan Absalonsen and Isaias as Adelaide's current foreign contingent.
Kurz said he would most likely wait until the European transfer window closes at the end of this month before assessing options for a fifth visa player.
