Hemed scores as Brighton beat Newcastle
Sep 24, 2017 - 7:26 PM Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan kept his starting spot as Brighton and Hove Albion beat Newcastle United 1-0 in the Premier League.Israel international Tomer Hemed scored in the 51st minute, to move Brighton up four places to 13th.
Ryan had been under pressure to keep his spot, with the club signing Dutch international keeper Tim Krul to a one-year deal from Newcastle midweek.
That pressure showed in the 76th minute when Ryan was almost caught out as a Jonjo Shelvey corner rattled his near post.
Hemed drew criticism for an incident late on when he appeared to stomp on DeAndre Yedlin.
Brighton boss Chris Hughton watched a replay of the 89th-minute clash and claimed there was no malice in Hemed's stamp.
Hemed could face a three-match ban if found guilty of foul play by an FA disciplinary committee, and any absence may leave Brighton short of striking options with Glenn Murray still nursing ankle trouble.
"I have seen it and my absolute impression was that there was no intention, particularly knowing the player," Hughton said.
"My first impression was that there was absolutely no intent.
"It's obviously very fresh at the moment. I was unaware of it at the time, and I have just been shown it."
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez insisted Brighton captain Bruno had fouled Chancel Mbemba in the build-up to Hemed's winner - but Hughton disagreed.
"What we saw is what you see in every game," Hughton said.
"It certainly wasn't a foul, but that's the same as what you'll see in any game."
The Spanish manager lamented his side's loose defending for Hemed's goal, but still insisted the strike should have been chalked off by referee Andre Marriner.
"It's a player standing still and he's made a block," said Benitez, claiming Bruno had fouled Mbemba.
"It's a very clear foul, but still we were not defending well."
The loss drops Newcastle five places to ninth on a packed table.
