Twellman, Revolution edge D.C. United to reach MLS Cup
Nov 6, 2006 - 12:41 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Taylor Twellman and the New England Revolution are headed back to the MLS Cup.Twellman tallied in the fourth minute and the Revolution played tremendous defense thereafter en route to a 1-0 victory over D.C. United in the Eastern Conference championship game.
It marks the second consecutive MLS Cup berth for New England, which dropped a 1-0 decision to the Los Angeles Galaxy in last season's title match.
Twellman, who netted a team-leading 11 goals in the regular season, banged home a crossing feed from Pat Noonan for the game's only score.
Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis made the early lead stand up, saving all eight shots he faced.
United striker Jaime Moreno had a golden opportunity to tie the score when he raced through New England's defense and beat Reis. But Moreno's shot skidded just wide of the far goalpost, preserving the Revolution's lead.
No one has shouted yet.
