Sydney FC hunting Asian player for ACL

Dec 29, 2017 - 12:50 AM Sydney FC are in the market for an Asian player to strengthen their Asian Champions League campaign.

The Sky Blues are already flying on the A-League front, sitting five points clear at the summit.

But coach Graham Arnold is only allowed to include three of his four imports in his ACL squad, meaning he'll be forced to omit one of Bobo, Milos Ninkovic, Jordy Buijs and Adrian Mierzejewski.

He signalled he is keen to compensate via the ACL's 3+1 rule, under which an Asian player can be signed outside the salary cap and play exclusively in the continent's flagship tournament.

"We've got a plus one in an Asian foreigner available and that can be outside the salary cap," Arnold said.

"So we're looking to strengthen the squad with an Asian to help with the Champions League program."

Arnold revealed his video analysis team were scouring footage for a wide player, suggesting either winger Mierzejewski or marquee playmaker Ninkovic could be left out.

"We're looking for someone with pace and someone who can change the game," he said.

"We're always looking but it's whether you can get them here or not."

Sydney host Perth on Saturday night in tact except the touch-and-go Matt Simon.

Last weekend they buried Wellington away 4-1, a result that followed 3-1 and 5-0 wins against Melbourne City and Western Sydney.

Those scorelines did little to appease their perfectionist coach.

"I was pretty angry after the Wellington game because I thought our performances need to be much better than what they are," Arnold said.

"At 2-0 you go for the kill and we let them back in the game with 2-1. It should have been 3-0 or 4-0 and then go for an even greater score than that."
