Moreno, Emilio help United snap skid
May 25, 2008 - 3:04 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Jaime Moreno and Luciano Emilio each scored in the second half to lead D.C. United to a 3-2 comeback victory over Toronto FC on Saturday in the second game of a home-and-home series.Gonzalo Peralta also tallied for United, which ended a four-game losing streak.
"For us as a team, we dug ourselves out of a ditch," Emilio said. "This was a big win."
Danny Dichio scored a pair of first-half goals for Toronto, which recorded a 1-0 triumph over D.C. United on Wednesday.
After Dichio's fourth goal of the season in extra time just before intermission gave Toronto a 2-1 edge, United took control in the second half - finally capitalizing when Moreno notched his fourth tally of the campaign on a penalty kick.
United forward Santino Quaranta muscled his way past Toronto defender Marvell Wynne and broke in on goal before Wynne pushed him from behind, giving the United a golden opportunity to tie the game.
Moreno deposited the ensuing penalty kick into the right corner, knotting the score at 2-2 in the 70th minute.
"It was a big relief and a nice win at home," Moreno said. "We broke the ice."
Emilio wasted little time giving United the lead, notching an unassisted tally - his second of the season - in the 72nd minute.
"I was in the right place at the right time and I poked it in for the winner," Emilio said.
Dichio opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Jim Brennan lobbed a pass over United goalkeeper Zach Wells and Dichio headed in into the vacant goal. He added another just before the break when he took a pass from Amado Guevara and unleashed a quick right-footed shot from just outside the box into the near corner.
"My two goals were irrelevant," Dichio said. "This was a tough loss."
D.C. United finished with 15 shots, including eight on goal.
"Tonight is a starting point. I've called on everyone to dig deep," United coach Tom Soehn said. "This was a good win. We got it done."
