Marsch, Flores score as Chivas downs Rapids
May 25, 2008 - 5:57 AM COMMERCE CITY, Colorado (Ticker) -- Jesse Marsch and Jorge Flores each scored as Chivas USA held on for a 2-1 triumph over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.Brad Guzan made six saves for Chivas, which won back-to-back contests for the first time this season.
"Not only did the guys put a lot into it tonight, also there was some good soccer out there," Marsch said. "I feel like our team is starting to come around a little bit and the soccer is starting to catch up with the group. If we can keep that going, I feel that we'll get more and more good results."
"This is good for our confidence," Chivas coach Preki said. "We throw a young team like this on the field and we come into a tough environment against a first-place team. The guys did a pretty good job of giving us a result. We have to feel pretty good about ourselves."
Tom McManus notched the lone goal for the Rapids, who were handed their fourth loss in their last six games.
Marsch opened the scoring just before the intermission, firing a right-footed shot to the far corner past Colorado goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul in the 45th minute. It was Marsch's third tally this season.
"When Justin (Braun) got the ball, I was just yelling at him because I knew I was wide open," Marsch said of his goal. "It got a little bit lucky to get through, but then it was on my left and I knew someone was coming so I just tried to set him up, but once it got on my right I just put it in the goal.
"At the last minute I saw Bouna's hand coming and I thought he was going to save it, but it still went in. That was huge."
Flores provided a much-needed insurance goal - his second of the season - in the 79th minute, receiving a pass from Carey Talley on a free kick and heading it just inside the far goalpost to give Chivas a 2-0 bulge.
"Talley made the cross. I thought the defender was going to head it but he didn't. I just headed it and it went in," Flores said. "I was able to make it 2-0 and give us the three points for this game."
McManus halved the deficit in the next minute, blasting a right-footed shot from well beyond the box just inside the right goalpost for his second tally of the campaign.
"It was our lack of urgency," Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo said. "This is a poor attitude and that's why we lost. It's not what Chivas did, it's what we didn't do. We put the pressure on in the last 10 minutes. We should have put the pressure in the first 80."
"I think they came out with a plan and they executed on their plan," Colorado defender Ugo Ihemelu said. "We didn't force our game on them, so we had to switch the formation we were playing at home. It's very disappointing."
