Razov rallies Chivas USA to draw with Red Bulls

Jun 29, 2008 - 6:14 AM CARSON, California (Ticker) -- Ante Razov scored during first-half stoppage time Saturday to rally Chivas USA to a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls at The Home Depot Center.

Dave Van den Bergh scored in the 26th minute on a free kick for the Red Bulls (5-4-5).

The midfielder launched a shot into the box which deflected off the shoulder of Chivas USA midfielder Carey Talley and past goalkeeper Brad Guzan. It was Van den Bergh's fourth goal of the season.

"It was a good ball in by Van den Bergh," Guzan said of the goal. "As a goalie I have to hold my position. I have to be able to react to anyone who could redirect the ball. It took a bounce and went into the sidenetting. That's the way it goes. It could have gone anywhere, you just try to set yourself so you can react to those balls."

Razov leveled the contest for Chivas USA (5-6-3) after cleaning up a Red Bulls' miscue in their own end. With time winding down in the half, Red Bulls defender Kevin Goldthwaite turned the ball over, causing goalkeeper Jon Conway to attempt to play the ball. Razov gained possession and alertly fired a shot into the vacant net for his second goal of the season and 111th of his career.

"Clearly there was a mistake on their part ... and (Goldthwaite) played the ball square across the back," Razov said. "Then it was just a race between me and Conway and fortunately I was able to get there."

New York coach Juan Carlos Osorio was not thrilled with the result.

"I think our goal was the result of the effort and pressure that we put on them," he said. "The other goal was in the last 10 seconds of the first half (and it) was a huge mistake - and for that I'm disappointed in the result.

"I felt we controlled the game in the first half and thought that we should be going home with more."

Chivas USA coach Preki was also disappointed with the outcome.

"A very disappointing result for us tonight," Preki said. "Yes, we got a point out of the game and we could have lost going down a goal so early. I feel we created nothing in the first half offensively and we go in at halftime and it's 1-1. They made a mistake and we scored. I feel that they scored a lucky goal and that was the first half."
