Cochrane, Earthquakes end season with win
Oct 26, 2008 - 6:02 AM SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- The San Jose Earthquakes ended their expansion season on a winning note.Ryan Cochrane and Shea Salinas recorded second-half goals as the Earthquakes snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC in the season finale for both teams on Saturday.
"It was great to finish with a win and a good performance," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said. "Overall, it was a great night for us and the fans as well. When it mattered earlier this season, we couldn't quite get it done, but tonight shows that we can play."
Ronnie O'Brien sent a corner kick into the middle of the penalty area where Cochrane rose up and headed the ball into the left corner of the goal in the 49th minute.
After Toronto defender Kevin Harmse committed a foul in the penalty box, Salinas scored on San Jose's first penalty kick of the season in the first minute of injury time to put the finishing touches on the contest.
"I didn't even think about the goalkeeper," Salinas said. "I just wanted to put it on frame and I was lucky enough to score."
The Earthquakes (8-13-9) can avoid last place in the Western Conference if the Los Angles Galaxy (8-13-8) lose on Sunday to FC Dallas.
San Jose outplayed Toronto FC for much of the match, outshooting their opponent, 16-4.
"I knew coming in here it would be very difficult because of the huge disappointment last weekend in not qualifying for the playoffs," Toronto coach John Carver said. "I think if you look at our performance out there tonight, it was pretty poor - but we're not too disheartened by it."
Goalkeeper Joe Cannon made two saves for his ninth shutout of the season and 65th of his career.
The loss guaranteed that Toronto (9-13-8) will finish in last place in the Eastern Conference.
