French Open day one snapshot

May 28, 2017 - 8:52 PM SNAPSHOT FROM DAY ONE OF THE FRENCH OPEN IN PARIS

Player of the day: Ekaterina Makarova - the Russian rocked the women's draw with a 6-2 6-2 trouncing of world No.1 Angelique Kerber in her first-ever appearance on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Stat of the day: Kerber is the first women's top seed in almost half a century of professional tennis to go out in the first round.

How the Aussies fared: Bernard Tomic and teenage wildcard Alex Di Minaur both bombed out without winning a set.

How the seeds fared: Apart from Kerber, former US Open runner-up Roberta Vinci and 2017 Australian Open semi-finalist Mirjana Lucic-Baroni also crashed out of the women's event, but Gilles Muller was the only men's seed to fall.

Quote of the day: "He killed me from the start." - Tomic after winning only six games against Austrian sixth-seed Dominic Thiem.

Biggest talking point: Whether Nick Kyrgios's hip and shoulder injuries can withstand a searching first-round examination on Tuesday against tough German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Tournament summary: While Kerber can pack her bags, dual Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova made an emotional and triumphant comeback from her December stabbing to safely reach the second round, as did other big names Venus Williams, former Australian Open finalist Dominka Cibulkova and Thiem in the men's event.
