Hammon leads Silver Stars over Shock

Aug 29, 2009 - 11:01 PM SAN ANTONIO(AP) -- Becky Hammon and the San Antonio Silver Stars finally broke out of their slump, and they needed overtime to do it.

Hammon scored 12 of her 32 points in overtime and the San Antonio Silver Stars beat the Detroit Shock 100-88 on Saturday.

San Antonio forced overtime when Sophia Young hit a 14-footer with 2 seconds left to tie the game at 79. Deanna Nolan had a shot to win at the end of regulation, but her jumper bounced off the rim.

"The shots went down today," said Hammon. "Sophia (Young), Ann (Wauters), and Ruth (Riley) played great minutes, as it came down to timely buckets, and we had some big ones tonight.

With the game tied at 83, Hammon took over hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to help San Antonio pull out the win. She bounced back from a scoreless performance in Thursday's loss to Indiana to also have nine assists.

"We got some momentum," said Hammon of the extra period. "We were able to ride that wave and come out and be strong in overtime."

Hammon became just the second player in the league to score 4,000 points and dish out 1,000 assists in her career, joining teammate Vicki Johnson.

The win snapped the Silver Stars (12-17) four game losing skid - their longest in three seasons. It left them a half-game behind Minnesota for the fourth seed in the Western Conference.

"It was a good team win," said Silver Stars head coach Dan Hughes. "We really haven't accomplished anything other than the fact that we broke the losing streak. Now we got to go play again as we have a lot of work to do."

Nolan led Detroit (13-15) with 34 points. Kara Braxton added 14 for the defending champions, who were missing Katie Smith - sidelined with lower back pain.

The Shock (13-15) who had won four games in a row, are still the fourth playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.

Young matched her season-high with 31 points and Ann Wauters added 15 to help the Silver Stars a four-game losing streak against Detroit, dating back to the WNBA Finals last season. The Shock swept the series 3-0 to win the championship.

"We have been on a bit of a winning streak, but San Antonio came and took care of business at home," said Detroit head coach Rick Mahorn. "We just need to get some wins from here on out to be in the running for the playoffs."

Down by 12 at the half, San Antonio chipped away, and then went on a 13-2 run to start the fourth quarter. The run was capped by an Edwige Lawson-Wade 3-pointer with 5:49, making it 71-63.

The Shock took back the lead when Taj McWilliams hit a layup with 42 seconds, making it 79-77, before Young's jumper.

"They were just making shots," said Nolan. "We were just one rebound away from winning in the end of regulation."

Nolan's four-point play with 3 seconds left in the first half gave Detroit a 47-35 lead at the break.
