Bryant's second stint with Sparks begins with a win

Jul 13, 2011 - 2:55 AM San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Joe "Jellybean" Bryant's second stint as head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks got off to a winning start on Tuesday night.

Ticha Penicheiro scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Sparks beat the San Antonio Silver Stars, 84-74.

On Sunday, Los Angeles decided to get rid of Jennifer Gillom and promote Bryant to head coach. Bryant, the father of Lakers star Kobe Bryant, served as Los Angeles' coach from August 2005 through the 2006 season, leading the team to a pair of playoff appearances.

The Sparks brought Bryant back into the organization in March, making him an assistant coach along with Sandy Brondello.

Natasha Lacy added 13 points for the Sparks, who snapped a five-game skid. Jantel Lavender and Ebony Hoffman tallied 12 points apiece.

Gillom, who guided the team into the playoffs last season, led LA to a 4-1 start this year. But the first five contests of a seven-game road trip all resulted in losses, and Gillom's firing.

Sophia Young finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Silver Stars, who have lost three in a row. Danielle Adams and Jia Perkins donated 16 and 14 points, respectively.
