Stars hold off Sparks

Aug 10, 2014 - 10:53 PM San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Kayla McBride scored a game-high 21 points and the San Antonio Stars held on to defeat the Los Angeles Sparks, 82-76, on Sunday.

Sophia Young-Malcom and Danielle Robinson both scored 14 points apiece and Jayne Appel finished with eight points, 20 rebounds and six assists for the Stars, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Nneka Ogwumike paced the Sparks with 18 points and Jantel Lavender had 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots for Los Angeles, which has dropped two of its last three.

San Antonio led 37-31 at the half and took a 61-56 advantage into the final quarter.

Armintie Herrington's layup gave the Sparks a 68-67 edge to cap a 10-3 spurt with four minutes to play. The Stars fired back with six straight points, but Lindsey Harding's jumper helped the Sparks reclaim the lead, making it a 74-73 game with 1:50 remaining.

Jia Perkins hit a running jumper to put the Stars back on top with a minute to go. Becky Hammon put the game out of reach with a three and McBride converted four free throws around Candace Parker's layup to account for the final score.
