Lynx advance with narrow win over Stars
Aug 24, 2014 - 1:36 AM San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Lindsay Whalen scored a playoff career- high 31 points to lead the Minnesota Lynx into the WNBA Western Conference Finals with a 94-89 win in Game 2 of a semifinal against the San Antonio Stars.Seimone Augustus finished with 21 points for the defending-champion Lynx, while 2014 WNBA MVP Maya Moore provided 16 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in the win.
Kayla McBride paced the Stars with 25 points and Danielle Adams added 23 in the losing effort. Becky Hammon netted 12 points in her final game in the league.
Hammon is set to join the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs' coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Adams scored eight points during a 22-4 surge from San Antonio to open the game. Minnesota trimmed the deficit to 28-12 after the opening period.
The Lynx returned serve to open the second, outscoring the hosts 20-8 over the first 5 1/2 minutes to cut the deficit to 36-32. Whalen made a pair of free throws with under a minute left in the half that made it a one-possession game, but Danielle Robinson added two free throws to give the Stars a 44-40 lead at the break.
Minnesota used a 12-0 run late in the third to grab a 65-59 lead and led for the entire fourth quarter, stretching its lead to as many as 11 to capture the series.
Minnesota will play the winner of the other semifinal between the Phoenix Mercury and Los Angeles Sparks.
