Sun snap Fever's 11-game win streak

Jul 19, 2009 - 10:47 PM UNCASVILLE, Conn.(AP) -- The Indiana Fever's 11-game winning streak is over.

Lindsay Whalen had 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists Sunday as the Connecticut Sun won 67-61. Indiana (11-3) had owned the longest winning streak in the WNBA since 2006, when Connecticut won 12 straight.

Connecticut (8-6), which moved within three games of the Fever in the Eastern Conference, has won three straight.

"It's a win against a really good team who has been playing with a lot of confidence," Sun coach Mike Thibault said.

The Sun had a 60-40 lead with 4:53 remaining, but went scoreless for more than four minutes. Indiana went on a 16-0 run to get within four until Asjha Jones made a free throw with 22.6 seconds left.

"We may get beat, but we're not going to quit," Indiana coach Lin Dunn said. "If we played with that type of energy at the start of the game, I'd be a little happier right now. Give Connecticut credit. They were determined and we didn't respond very well to it."

Connecticut won despite committing 26 turnovers, the most this season.

"The fact that they got 50 percent of their points off our turnovers is incredible," Thibault said. "We lead the league in fewest turnovers, but on nights we have them, we throw them around. We should start autographing them for the people in the stands. It's terrible."

Jones and Erin Phillips scored 12 points apiece for Connecticut and Sandrine Gruda had 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Gruda did not play during the teams' last game in Indiana earlier this month.

"We wanted to protect our home court and play hard," Jones said.

Katie Douglas and Ebony Hoffman scored 15 points each to lead Indiana. The Fever shot a season-low 29 percent from the field.

"Nobody in here likes to lose," Douglas said. "We have a good thing going right now. We didn't play very well and (Connecticut) did a good job."
