Melvin helps keep former club winless in return

Jun 2, 2007 - 3:10 AM Washington (Ticker) -- Chasity Melvin showed her former club what they were missing.

Melvin recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a season-high 15 rebounds as the Chicago Sky posted a 75-70 victory over the Washington Mystics.

An eight-year veteran, Melvin was traded away from the nation's capital for Monique Currie just one week ago. Melvin made 3-of-10 shots from the field off the bench.

Currie finished with just seven points on 2-of-6 shooting.

Candice Dupree and Jia Perkins both scored 19 points and Dominique Canty chipped in 18 and seven assists for Chicago, which bounced back from its heartbreaking 102-97 setback to the Connecticut Sun at home on Thursday.

Things just seem to keep getting worst for the the Mystics, who remain winless at 0-5. Earlier Friday, the team had to deal with the resignation of coach Richie Adubato due to the club's dismal start. Assistant coach Wayne "Tree" Rollins has taken over on an interim basis.

Washington had a chance to finally get over the hump, taking a 51-47 advantage after three quarters, before Chicago pulled away in the decisive period.

The Sky opened the quarter with a commanding 20-6 surge capped by Dupree's 15-foot jumper at the 3:27 mark for a 67-57 edge. Dupree, Perkins and Canty netted all the points during the run.

Alana Beard scored 19 points and Nakia Sanford added 11 for the Mystics, who shot 32 percent (24-of-75) and scored 34 points in the paint.
