Ogwumike powers Sparks over Fever

Jul 13, 2012 - 1:30 AM Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Nneka Ogwumike scored 22 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Sparks squeak past the Indiana Fever, 77-74, Thursday night.

Ogwumike tied a WNBA record with 12 offensive rebounds, while Candace Parker totaled 19 points, seven boards and four blocks for the Sparks. Kristi Toliver added 19 points, and sank a pair of free throws in the closing seconds.

Tamika Catchings scored 27 for the Fever, but her potential tying three-point shot at the buzzer clanked off the front of the rim as time expired. Briann January scored 11 in defeat.

Parker made two free throws with 1:23 left to give the Sparks a 75-74 edge, and then the Fever committed a shot clock violation.

Erlana Larkins had a chance to put Indiana back on top, but she missed two foul shots with 35.5 seconds to go.

Toliver made two from the charity stripe with 6.1 seconds left, after missing a three-point shot. The Sparks kept possession when Delisha Milton-Jones tipped the ball out to Toliver, who was fouled by Katie Douglas.

Both teams head into the Olympic break. The Sparks, who posted their fifth straight victory, will next play Aug. 18 at Seattle, a team they've beaten four times this year. The Fever, who had won five in a row at home over the Sparks, next play Aug. 16 at home against Washington.
