Thompson, Comets top Mystics

Jun 23, 2007 - 3:03 AM HOUSTON (Ticker) -- After a disastrous start to the season, the Houston Comets are on a modest winning streak.

Tina Thompson poured in 23 points as the Comets topped the Washington Mystics, 95-85, en route their second straight victory.

Ashley Shields had 20 points and Hamchetou Maiga-Ba added 18 for Houston, which started the season 0-10 before earning its first victory on Wednesday. This is the first time the Comets have won back-to-back games since July 27-30.

Sancho Lyttle contributed seven points and nine rebounds for the Comets, who improved to 9-1 all-time at home against the Mystics.

The Comets (2-10) were again without standout Sheryl Swoopes, who missed her ninth consecutive game with a bulging disc in her lower back.

DeLisha Milton-Jones had 24 points and Nakia Sanford added 21 to pace the Washington offense. Sanford was 13-of-14 from the free-throw line before attempting her first field goal with 2:58 to play in the first half.

The Mystics (2-10) are 2-2 under interim coach Tree Rollins, who took over when Richie Adubato resigned after an 0-8 start.
