Smith guides Shock past Mystics
Jul 22, 2007 - 2:15 AM AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Katie Smith scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Detroit Shock to a 66-58 victory over the Washington Mystics on Saturday.Deanna Nolan added 12 and Katie Feenstra and Plenette Pierson scored each 10 off the Shock bench.
The Shock (17-5) took an 11-point lead in the first quarter after Smith spurred an 11-0 run. Detroit led by as many as 17 in the game and didn't trail by fewer than eight points after taking control.
The Mystics (9-13) opened the second half with an 11-4 run capped by DeLisha Milton-Jones' 3-point shot and closed the gap to 33-24 but couldn't complete the comeback.
Washington's Alana Beard led all scorers with 16 points and Nakia Sanford added 11.
Detroit set a franchise record by allowing just 13 points in the first half. The Shock led, 29-13, at halftime.
Washington shot just 19 percent in the first half and sank 1-of-9 3-point attempts.
