Late free throws lead Sun over Fever
Sep 15, 2013 - 11:34 PM Uncasville, CT (Sports Network) - Iziane Castro Marques sank a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds left in overtime to break a tie and push the Connecticut Sun to an 82-80 win over the Indiana Fever. All five Connecticut starters scored in double figures, led by Castro Marques' 19 points on 7-of-14 from the field. Mistie Bass and Renee Montgomery each chipped in 16 points with Bass also corralling a game-high 12 rebounds for the Sun (10-24), who ended the year with their worst record in franchise history.
Karima Christmas paced Indiana with 21 points while Erlana Larkins and Jeanette Pohlen tallied 12 points and nine boards apiece. Larkins' mid-range jumper was off the mark as time expired after Castro Marques put the Sun up by two from the charity stripe.
Bass netted 12 of her 16 in the first half to help the Sun take a 34-32 lead into the locker room.
Trailing 80-77 with less than a minute remaining in the game, Indiana received Katie Douglas' only triple to tie the score. On the ensuing possession, Bass missed twice around the rim but Castro Marques pulled down a crucial offensive rebound. The Sun regrouped and called timeout, leading to a Castro Marques attempt at the rim, which was also off the mark, but the guard grabbed her own offensive board and drew a foul on Douglas.
The Fever (16-18) will play top-seeded Chicago in the first round of the playoffs.
