Johnson, Young carry Silver Star past Sparks
Aug 15, 2007 - 5:47 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Vickie Johnson and Sophia Young each scored 19 points as the San Antonio Silver Stars survived for an 84-77 overtime triumph over the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday.All-Star Becky Hammon poured in 18 points for the Silver Stars (20-11), who are just one-half game behind idle Phoenix (21-11) for first place in the Western Conference standings.
It was sweet revenge for San Antonio, which suffered an embarrassing 86-67 setback at the AT&T Center to Los Angeles on August 4.
In the extra session, Johnson drained a 3-pointer and Young followed with a jumper of her own during an impressive 10-2 surge for 79-70 with 1:25 remaining.
Los Angeles had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Mwadi Mabika misfired off the glass with three seconds to go.
Christi Thomas led the way for the Sparks, collecting 18 points and 13 rebounds while Mabika netted 16. They only won once in their last seven games.
