Stampeders give Paredes contract extension
Jan 10, 2013 - 6:55 PM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - The Calgary Stampeders signed kicker Rene Paredes to a contract extension, head coach/general manager John Hufnagel announced on Thursday. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed
Paredes, 27, set a new franchise record last season by converting 93 percent of his field goal attempts, which also earned him a CFL and West Division All Star nod in just his second season in the league.
His 93 percent success rate was the second best single-season conversion rate in CFL history.
"In his two seasons with the team, Rene has established himself as one of the league's most reliable kickers," Hufnagel said. "I look forward to seeing him build on that success in the coming seasons."
The Concordia University product connected on 40-of-43 field goal tries in 2012 and had a stretch of 18 consecutive makes to close the regular season. He was also 49-for-49 on extra point attempts and posted 170 points, good for third in the CFL.
In the postseason, Paredes made all eight of his field-goal attempts as the Stampeders reached the Grey Cup final but lost to the Toronto Argonauts.
"I've really enjoyed my first two seasons with the Stampeders and I'm very pleased to sign this contract extension that will let me stay in Calgary," Paredes remarked. "I have great teammates and great coaches and I'm looking forward to the future and a chance to take that final step to winning a Grey Cup championship."
