Hughes signs extension with Stampeders

Mar 3, 2014 - 7:03 PM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - The Calgary Stampeders signed Charleston Hughes, the CFL's reigning sacks leader, to a contract extension on Monday.

The lineman led the league last season with 18 sacks, one shy of Calgary's franchise record held by Harold Hallman, and ranks third all-time in club history with 54.

"Charleston has firmly established himself as a premier defensive end in this league and is a key cog in our defensive unit," Calgary head coach and general manager John Hufnagel said. "I'm pleased that he has chosen to remain with the Stampeders and look forward to his continued excellence in the years to come."

Since joining the Stampeders in 2008, Hughes has amassed 258 tackles and three interceptions.
