D-backs take series finale from Padres
Sep 5, 2014 - 4:44 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Randall Delgado tossed five scoreless innings in his first start since April and the Arizona Diamondbacks topped the San Diego Padres, 5-1, in Wednesday's series finale. All eight position players had at least one hit for Arizona, which finished with 13 hits as a team. A.J. Pollock went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Aaron Hill, Ender Inciarte and Chris Owings all had two hits apiece.
Delgado (3-3) had been pitching out of the bullpen since starting two games in early April. He gave up nine runs on 16 hits in 7 1/3 innings in those two outings.
The 24-year-old only gave up two hits and didn't walk a batter over five strong innings in this one. Will Harris faced the minimum in two innings of relief to help preserve the win.
"Randall did a great job for us," said Hill. "For us to get a few runs and for the bullpen to shut the door, it was perfect."
Former Diamondback Ian Kennedy (10-12) surrendered four runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings to absorb the loss. Kennedy dropped to 2-2 in five starts against his former team.
"Ian's stuff was fine," Padres manager Bud Black said. "They punched some hits together. We just couldn't hit."
A three-run second inning gave the D-backs an early advantage. Hill started the flurry with a single to left and Pollock followed with a double. Both runners came in to score when Didi Gregorius reached on an infield single and third baseman Cory Spangenberg threw the ball away.
Delgado advanced Gregorius to third with a sac bunt, and Inciarte plated him to make it 3-0.
Mark Trumbo opened the third inning with a double and Miguel Montero singled him in to make it 4-0. Neither team pushed another run across until the seventh, when Hill doubled in Peralta against reliever Blaine Boyer.
Lefty Oliver Perez struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth inning, but not before a wild pitch allowed Will Venable to score the lone Padres run.
Game Notes
Kennedy had been 4-0 over his last eight home starts ... D-backs outfielder David Peralta has now hit safely in eight straight games against the Padres ... San Diego hit 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
