Padres wrap up homestand vs. D-backs
Sep 4, 2014 - 2:29 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres will put the finishing touches on a 10-game homestand when they close out a four-game series versus the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday at Petco Park. The Padres were aiming for a series win and a third straight victory on Wednesday, but the Diamondbacks broke out the bats in a 6-1 decision. Andrew Cashner was saddled with the loss and was reached for four runs -- two earned -- and five hits in seven innings.
"Last year he got a great deal of confidence and momentum," Padres manager Bud Black said of Cashner. "He'll finish strong here physically. I suspect that he will continue to throw the ball in the mid-90s and go into the winter strong."
Alexi Amarista and Seth Smith had two hits apiece in San Diego's five-hit night, while Smith drove in the lone run with an RBI double in the third inning.
San Diego had won six of seven games and is 6-3 on its 11-day homestand. After this series versus the D-backs, the Padres will hit the road for nine games against Colorado, Los Angeles and Arizona.
Ian Kennedy draws the start for the Padres Thursday and the former Diamondback is 10-11 with a 3.65 earned run average. Kennedy is 5-2 in his last seven decisions and did not factor in the outcome of a 2-1 win over the Dodgers on Saturday, as he was sharp in allowing one run in seven innings.
Kennedy, who has lasted six innings or more 20 times in 28 starts, is 4-5 in 14 starts at Petco Park this season and 2-1 with a 5.73 ERA in four career starts against the D-backs.
Arizona snapped its eight-game losing streak on the road on Wednesday and received seven innings of one-run ball from Josh Collmenter.
"Pretty good," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said of Collmenter. "He was able to make pitches when he needed to. He's much better when he works down."
David Peralta had two hits and two RBI, while Chris Owings, Miguel Montero and Collmenter each had an RBI for Arizona, which won for only the fifth time in the past 17 games and is 1-2 so far on a 10-game road trip, which includes stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The D-backs will tab right-hander Randall Delgado as the starter Thursday and he is 2-3 with a 5.85 ERA in 40 games (2 starts) this season. Delgado hasn't started since April 10 at the Giants and is 1-1 with a 4.08 ERA in four games (2 starts) lifetime against the Padres.
Arizona is 9-6 against San Diego this season and has won six of the previous 10 meetings between the NL West foes.
