Padres hold off D-backs

Sep 13, 2014 - 5:05 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Stults pitched six innings and the Padres held off the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game series.

Rene Rivera homered for San Diego, which won for only the second time in its last nine games.

Stults (7-16) allowed seven hits and five runs -- two earned -- to snap a personal three-game skid.

A.J. Pollock went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBI for the Diamondbacks, who lost their season-high seventh in a row.

Vidal Nuno (0-6) surrendered eight hits and six runs over five frames to remain winless in an Arizona uniform following his trade from the Yankees on July 6.

"Nuno has been throwing the ball great for us, but tonight he didn't have his good stuff," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said.

Kevin Quackenbush worked out of trouble in the ninth to notch his third save. Cody Ross singled with one out before shortstop Alexi Amarista made a sparkling play by stopping a ground ball and turning it into a force out at second. Cliff Pennington singled to center to put men at the corners for pinch-hitter Aaron Hill, who flied out to right field.

"We defended well and got some big hits, a lot of contributions from a lot of guys. It was a good team win," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Pollock's line single to right plated Ender Inciarte in the opening inning, but Cameron Maybin's RBI triple highlighted a two-run top of the second. Maybin was thrown out trying to score on a ground ball later in the inning.

Jedd Gyorko had an RBI ground-rule double and he scored on Yasmani Grandal's single to left. Yangervis Solarte singled in Amarista in the fourth and Rivera went deep to left the next inning for a 6-1 cushion.

Pinch-hitter Nolan Reimold singled in a run in the bottom half, and Pollock homered to center.
