Diamondbacks try to rebound vs. Padres

Sep 12, 2014 - 2:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks hope to get back on track when they start a three-game series versus the San Diego Padres Friday at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks have lost six in a row and went 2-8 on a recent 10-game road trip. They have suffered back-to-back sweeps at the hands of Los Angeles and San Francisco, and are coming off Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Giants.

Randall Delgado was dealt the loss in four innings of work and allowed three runs and seven hits.

"That was an unfortunate first inning," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "Not a lot you can do about that."

Jake Lamb homered and Mark Trumbo drove in a run for the D-backs.

Arizona will also host the Giants on this six-game homestand and hopes Vidal Nuno can find success for the first time in a D-backs uniform. Nuno is 0-5 with a 3.16 earned run average in 11 starts since coming over in a trade with the New York Yankees and pitched well in defeat at Los Angeles last Friday.

Nuno allowed two runs in seven innings and posted five strikeouts with a pair of walks. The left-hander has allowed two runs or less in five straight starts and faced San Diego for the first time in a 5-2 win on Aug. 23. Nuno did not record a decision and tossed 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball.

The Padres will resume their nine-game road trip Friday and have lost seven of their last eight games.

San Diego dropped two of three matchups at Dodger Stadium and suffered a 4-0 loss in Wednesday's rubber match, as Ian Kennedy was reached for three runs and 10 hits in six innings of work for the loss.

"I thought he threw the ball fine, good velocity, good tight slider, good change," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I thought overall he pitched well enough to win on given nights. Kept us in the game, threw pitches in the seventh inning in a pitchers' duel. He got outpitched by their guy, and we didn't hit their guy."

Black's ballclub mustered just four hits on the evening.

Eric Stults draws the start for San Diego on Friday and he is 6-16 with a 4.55 earned run average. Stults has lost three straight starts and allowed all three runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 3-0 setback at Colorado last Friday.

Stults is 2-10 in 16 road starts this season and 5-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 13 career meetings (11 starts) with the D-backs.

Arizona is 10-6 against San Diego this season.
