Santana, Gattis lead Braves over Padres

Jul 28, 2014 - 7:43 PM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Atlanta Braves right-hander Ervin Santana stifled the San Diego Padres and outdueled a former outfielder making his first major league start in Monday's 2-0 win at Turner Field.

Santana (10-6) gave up only five hits -- all singles -- and matched a career high with 11 strikeouts over eight innings. He permitted just one runner to reach scoring position as he won a third straight outing.

Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 32nd save of the season.

Evan Gattis had three hits and knocked in both Atlanta runs.

"Those two carried us today," Atlanta third baseman Chris Johnson said about Santana and Gattis.

The Braves took three of four from San Diego to finish their longest homestand of the year at 6-5.

Recalled from Triple-A El Paso to make a spot start for the injured Ian Kennedy, Jason Lane (0-1) tossed six scoreless frames before Gattis homered to lead off the seventh. The lefty allowed six hits overall, struck out two and issued no walks in six-plus innings.

"The Padres gave me this opportunity," Lane said. "My job was to come up here and execute pitches and keep the team in the game."

Lane, the oldest pitcher to make his first MLB start in Padres history at 37 years and 219 days old, played as an outfielder for Houston and San Diego from 2002-07.

Gattis drove an 0-1 slider over the left-field wall to open the seventh. After Johnson followed with his second hit of the game, Nick Vincent relieved Lane, who threw 68 of his 92 pitches for strikes.

"It's a little frustrating to make a mistake like that, obviously in a tight game," Lane said about the Gattis home run.

The Braves had the bases loaded later in the seventh, but Vincent got a pinch- hitting Tommy La Stella to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Gattis singled home Justin Upton with two outs in the eighth. Upton drew a one-out walk against Dale Thayer and scored on Gattis' opposite-field hit to right.

Lane became the oldest pitcher to make his first major league start since 38- year-old Troy Percival in 2007 ... Lane had 4.67 ERA in 19 starts for El Paso this season. He tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings over two relief appearances with San Diego in June ... Kennedy missed his scheduled start with a sore left oblique ... The Padres optioned infielder Brooks Conrad to El Paso to make room for Lane. The team also placed outfielder Carlos Quentin on the 15- day disabled list with left knee soreness and activated second baseman Jedd Gyorko from the DL. Gyorko missed 44 games with plantar fasciitis in his left foot ... Atlanta's Jason Heyward is listed as day-to-day after leaving the game with lower back soreness. Ryan Doumit replaced Heyward in right field to start the fourth.
