Final/12
Padres top Braves in 12 innings
Aug 3, 2014 - 6:37 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Venable drove in the winning run with a single in the 12th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves in the second of a three-game set. With Craig Kimbrel (0-3) on the mound, Yangervis Solarte drew a walk. After Seth Smith struck out, walks by Jedd Gyorko and Chris Nelson loaded the bases for Venable, who lined a shot over the head of a leaping Jason Heyward in right field.
"I don't normally go out there and throw that many pitches, but you go out there and throw a lot of balls and walk guys, that's what happens," said Kimbrel. "I can't go out there and walk guys like I did tonight."
Solarte also drove in a run and scored twice, while Rene Rivera had two hits and scored a run for the Padres, who have won four of their last five games.
Tim Stauffer (3-2) pitched two innings to earn the win.
Freddie Freeman had three hits and an RBI, while Chris Johnson drove in the other run for the Braves, who have lost their last five games.
Ervin Santana pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts for Atlanta.
Ian Kennedy worked five innings in his start for San Diego, allowing one run on two hits and five walks while striking out seven.
"We kept battling, the Braves kept battling, both teams kept pitching," said Padres manager Bud Black. "Both teams threatened, both teams made some plays. There was a little bit of everything in there."
Atlanta struck early as B.J. Upton walked to lead off the game, moved to second on a Tommy La Stella ground out and came home on a Freeman double for a 1-0 lead.
San Diego left the bases loaded in the second and didn't threaten again until the seventh when the team went on top.
Rivera singled to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alexi Amarista. A ground out from Everth Cabrera put Rivera on third and Solarte scored him with a single to left. After Smith singled, Gyorko walked to load the bases.
Jordan Walden then took the mound and promptly served up a wild pitch that allowed Solarte to score for a 2-1 Padres lead.
Atlanta, though, tied the contest in the eighth inning. With one out, Heyward singled and Evan Gattis walked before Johnson punched a single to center.
The Braves appeared poised to go ahead in the 12th as Freeman singled to lead things off. Justin Upton followed with a double and an intentional walk to Heyward loaded the bases with no outs.
Gattis, though, hit into a 5-2-3 double play, and Nelson knocked down Johnson's sharp grounder down the first base line and tossed the ball to Stauffer for the final out.
