Chen shines as O's complete sweep of Red Sox

Sep 11, 2014 - 5:45 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Flaherty went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, Wei-Yin Chen tossed seven solid innings and the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 10-6 to complete a three-game sweep.

Caleb Joseph went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI for the Orioles, who have won four in a row. Adam Jones added three hits, two RBI and a run scored.

Chen (15-4), who took a perfect game into the sixth, gave up one run on three hits while striking out four.

"He just located," said Joseph. "Located his fastball up, down, in and out. He had a good slider, kept them off-balance with his changeup, mixed in a few curveballs. When he's got pretty good pinpoint action, he does a good job of getting deep in games and gives us a chance to win."

Xander Bogaerts and Carlos Rivero homered for the Red Sox, who have dropped four straight games.

Boston starter Brandon Workman (1-9) allowed six runs -- five earned -- on six hits with three walks over three innings. His losing streak reached nine decisions.

The Orioles exploded for six runs in the third. Flaherty singled, moved to second when Nick Markakis walked and raced home on Alejandro De Aza's single to right-center field. Jones followed with a two-run double down the left- field line.

Nelson Cruz reached first on Rivero's throwing error and Chris Davis singled to load the bases with one out. Steve Pearce then walked to force in a run. Joseph and Flaherty hit consecutive RBI singles to make it 6-0.

"I have to do a better job of limiting damage," Workman said. "Seems like lately, it's been one inning that's gotten me. In Seattle, at New York, or today, it's one inning that all my runs have come in."

Baltimore took an 8-0 lead on Joseph's two-run homer in the fifth.

Meanwhile, Chen retired the first 16 batters he faced before giving up a one- out double to Dan Butler in the sixth. It was Butler's first hit in the big leagues.

Bogaerts homered in the seventh.

Boston made things interesting with a five-run ninth. Joe Saunders loaded the bases with one out before giving up a two-run double to Daniel Nava. Rivero followed with a three-run blast to left, his first homer in the majors. Tommy Hunter and Darren O'Day each recorded one out to secure the victory for Baltimore. O'Day was credited with his third save of the season.

Game Notes

The Orioles improved to 10-6 against Boston this season ... Baltimore had 15 hits ... Flaherty's four hits was a career high ... Workman has not won a game since June 10.
