Tigers edge White Sox on Cabrera's single in 9th

Sep 24, 2014 - 5:42 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers probably didn't expect they had to bat in the home ninth after their lefty ace David Price cruised through his first eight innings.

Good thing Miguel Cabrera was there to come through for the Tigers again.

Cabrera's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox in the middle test of a three-game set.

Price surrendered just three hits through eight frames before the White Sox tagged him for three runs on five hits to tie the game in the ninth. Joe Nathan (5-4) recorded the final out to notch the win and the hosts bounced right back in the home half.

Ian Kinsler singled and Torii Hunter walked against Jake Petricka (1-6) before Cabrera ripped a base hit to left to plate Kinsler and record his 11th career game-winning hit.

"That was a little more stressful than we wanted to make it, but we'll take it," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.

Detroit remains a game ahead of Kansas City for first place in the AL Central following the Royals' 7-1 win over Cleveland Tuesday.

Cabrera finished 2-for-5, while Kinsler posted two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Tigers, who had dropped four of their last six games coming in.

Adam Eaton singled and Alexei Ramirez doubled to start the ninth to put runners on second and third. Price struck out Jose Abreu on three pitches, but Avisail Garcia rolled a base hit up the middle to bring home Eaton and Ramirez.

Ausmus then strolled out to the mound to check on Price, who had fired 105 pitches.

"He said immediately he felt fine," Ausmus said.

Following Dayan Viciedo's fly out, Paul Konerko singled to put runners on the corners. Marcus Semien's base hit to right plated Garcia to tie it and knock Price out of the game.

Nathan walked pinch-hitter Conor Gillaspie, but got Carlos Sanchez to fly out to end the threat.

"You look at it two ways," Konerko said. Once we tied it you want to win that game and kind of finish off a great night. But at the same time, even though it's a little more heartbreaking, it's better than going 1-2-3 in the ninth."

Earlier, after leaving runners in scoring position in the first, second and fourth innings, Detroit broke through with a run in the fifth and added two more in the seventh.

Rajai Davis led off the fifth with a single and advanced to second on Kinsler's groundout. Davis scored during Hunter's at-bat when Josh Phegley's throw sailed over the head of Semien as Davis was stealing third.

Alex Avila began the seventh with a base hit before being forced out at second on Eugenio Suarez's sacrifice bunt attempt. Davis then chopped one off the glove of Semien attempting to field the grounder to his left, putting runners on the corners.

Kinsler ripped a single to left to plate pinch-runner Austin Romine. Hunter then laced a hot-shot grounder that glanced off the glove of Semien moving to his right. The ball bounced into the stands for a ground-rule double, allowing Davis to score and give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage.

Game Notes

Cabrera tallied his first walk-off hit since Aug. 17, 2013 against Kansas City ... Detroit was 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position, while Chicago finished 2-for-7 ... White Sox starter Scott Carroll yielded two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts over six frames ... Price tossed 80 of his 114 pitches for strikes.
