Tigers resume Central title hunt against White Sox

Sep 23, 2014 - 4:28 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers try to inch even closer to an American League Central title on Tuesday when they continue a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park.

Detroit didn't help itself on Monday, as Chris Bassitt fired 7 2/3 scoreless innings and Chicago blanked the Tigers, 2-0.

Bassitt (1-1) allowed six hits and walked one to pick up his first major league win, while Tyler Flowers smacked a two-run homer in the second inning for the White Sox, who have won three of their last four games.

"The first win always means a lot, but being so close to home and having my friends and family here makes it even better," Bassitt said.

Jake Petricka recorded the final four outs for his 14th save of the season.

Kyle Lobstein (1-1) surrendered two runs on five hits and a walk over seven frames for Detroit, which has dropped four of its last six contests.

"Teams don't roll over, they have a job to do. They're trying to prove something to themselves," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said of the lowly White Sox.

The Tigers are one game ahead of Kansas City for first place in the AL Central following the Royals' 2-0 win over Cleveland. The Indians held on for a 4-3 10-inning win earlier in the day to conclude a rain-suspended game from last month.

Detroit will hope to pad that advantage tonight behind former AL Cy Young Award winner David Price, who has lost four of his last six starts. Price was awful on Wednesday in Minnesota, as the lowly Twins torched him for five runs in 5 2/3 innings, dropping him to 3-4 to go along with a 4.09 ERA since being acquired from Tampa Bay.

"Just execute pitches," said Price of how he can turn things around. "That's what it boils down to. It doesn't matter how good your stuff is, you've got to go out and execute, and if you do that, you put yourself in a chance to be successful."

Price is just 4-5 with a 3.69 ERA in nine starts against the ChiSox.

Chicago will hand the ball to righty Scott Carroll, who is 5-10 with a 5.01 ERA. Carroll hasn't won since Aug. 17 and did not get a decision against the Twins his last time out, as he surrendered four runs in five innings of his team's 7-6 triumph.

He is 1-4 with a 6.68 ERA in his last six starts.

Chicago has won nine of its 17 matchups with the Tigers.
