Kipnis leads Tribe over Bombers
Aug 11, 2014 - 12:53 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Kipnis had three hits and scored three times to lead the Cleveland Indians over the New York Yankees, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.Michael Brantley and Yan Gomes had two RBI each for Cleveland, which won two of three from the Yankees.
Indians starter Carlos Carrasco (4-4) earned the win in his first start since April 25, tossing five innings of two-hit ball. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter to earn his first win as a starter this season (1-3) and first win overall since July 19.
Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits, including a homer, and stole a base for the Yankees, who have dropped two straight.
Yankees starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda (7-8) lost his second straight decision, allowing three runs on five hits, walking four and striking out three, in 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander hasn't won a decision since July 25 when he defeated the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Indians got a run in the first inning when Brantley singled home Kipnis, who led off the contest with a single, moved to second on a Jose Ramirez ground out and to third on a Kuroda wild pitch.
"He kind of makes us go," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Kipnis. "He can steal bases, he can go first to third, he can hit the ball in the gap. When he's hitting the ball how he is ... we're a much better team."
Cleveland added another run in the third courtesy of Kipnis and Brantley again. Kipnis doubled to start the inning, moved to third on a Ramirez sac bunt and scored on Brantley's sac fly.
The Indians added another run in the fifth while also forcing Kuroda from the game. With runners on the corners and two outs, Kuroda walked Carlos Santana and Gomes to force home a run. Yankees manager Joe Girardi then lifted Kuroda in favor of David Huff, who got Lonnie Chisenhall to ground out to end the inning.
"He wasn't sharp with his split," said Girardi about Kuroda. "He battled today. He kept us in the game."
Kipnis again played a part in the Indians' fourth run of the contest, scoring on Gomes' two-out base hit in the seventh inning. Kipnis singled to start the frame, moved to second on Ramirez's sac bunt and stole third before scoring his third run of the game.
Ellsbury's ninth-inning solo homer ended the Yankees streak of not scoring a run at a season-high 19 innings.
"It seems like when we hit balls hard they caught them," said Girardi about the offense. "We just didn't swing the bats well today."
