Indians close series with Yanks in the Bronx
Aug 10, 2014 - 1:46 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A rubber match of a three-game weekend set is on tap for Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, as the New York Yankees play host to the Cleveland Indians. The Indians snapped their four-game losing streak on Saturday with a 3-0 victory, riding yet another dominating performance by their ace.
Corey Kluber (13-6) was masterful in his sixth straight win, allowing four hits and a walk in six scoreless innings while striking out 10. He's been the best pitcher in baseball since the All-Star Break, going 4-0 with a 0.68 ERA, punching out 45 in 40 innings.
"Every time he toes the rubber it's a win," Indians closer Cody Allen said.
Cleveland's bullpen was lights out as well with three scoreless innings. Allen pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save.
Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez both went 3-for-4 with a home run. Brantley's was his 17th of the season, while Ramirez's was the first of his career.
Brandon McCarthy (4-1) was handed his first loss as a Yankee but was nonetheless impressive, allowing seven hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Jacoby Ellsbury had two of New York's five hits. The 4-5-6-7 batters combined to go 0-for-15 with nine strikeouts.
With a single in the sixth inning, Yankees star shortstop Derek Jeter passed Honus Wagner for sixth on the all-time career hits list with 3,431.
"It's one of those 'Wow!' moments, you know what I mean?" Jeter said. "To say you have more hits than anyone who's played the position at all, it's something I'm extremely proud of. Obviously, I would've liked to have won the game, but it's something that I'll be able to tell my kids about one day."
Carlos Carrasco will make just his fifth start of the season for the Indians on Sunday. He had carved out a nice role for himself as a reliever, boasting a 3.88 ERA over 30 appearances.
Carrasco saw extended work out of the bullpen on Aug. 5, allowing six hits and three earned runs over four innings as the Indians lost to Cincinnati, 9-2.
The 27-year-old righty has been excellent in limited work against the Yankees this season with four shutout innings.
Hiroki Kuroda tries to improve upon his up-and-down season for the Yankees. He's 7-7 with a 3.97 ERA, striking out 98 while walking just 27.
Kuroda has pitched seven innings in two straight starts, including a no- decision against Detroit on Aug. 5, charged with six hits and three earned runs while striking out five and walking none.
The right-hander has allowed only 30 base runners in 26 1/3 innings since the All-Star Break and is 2-1 in three career starts against Cleveland. Kuroda has a 4-3 mark in 12 starts at Yankee Stadium.
New York, which was 6-1 against the Tribe last season, sits six games back in the AL East and is 1 1/2 games behind in the wild card race.
