Dodgers beat Padres to avoid sweep

Sep 1, 2014 - 1:44 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hyun-Jin Ryu came back to pitch seven strong innings, Adrian Gonzalez had four hits for the first time this season and the Los Angeles Dodgers rolled to a 7-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series.

The Dodgers banged out 12 hits to avoid being swept by the Padres in San Diego for the first time in almost four years.

The Padres had won each of their last three games with walk-off hits in extra innings. The Dodgers scored five runs in the last two innings Sunday to end that run and San Diego's four-game winning streak.

"It was a great series. Two walk-off wins against a first-place team," said Padres manager Bud Black. "We were right there until the eighth. We just couldn't string hits together against Ryu."

Juan Uribe came off the 15-day disabled list and had two hits and two RBI for NL West-leading LA after missing 12 games with a right hamstring strain.

Ryu (14-6) also returned from an injury -- a right hip strain -- and threw seven innings for the win in his first start since Aug. 13. He struck out seven, walked none and gave up four hits and a run.

Eric Stults (6-15) took the loss after surrendering two runs on five hits in six innings.

The Dodgers broke the game open with a four-run eighth, tearing their way through three relievers. The rally was sparked by Gonzalez's leadoff single and Matt Kemp's double. Carl Crawford then drew a walk and Uribe scored Gonzalez with a single.

Kemp gave the inning its best highlight when he scored on Jesse Hahn's wild pitch, sliding head first into home and lifting his left hand over Hahn's tag before slapping it down on the plate.

Darwin Barney added a two-run single to make it 6-1. A.J. Ellis made the first out at home when he was gunned down trying to score on Andre Ethier's single to center fielder Abraham Almonte.

Uribe added an RBI double in the ninth inning.

"A good win for us -- we're in position to control our own destiny," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.

Yasiel Puig led off the game with a double and scored on Scott Van Slyke's two-out single to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.

The Padres tied it after Yangervis Solarte hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the first and came home on Yasmani Grandal's double.

That was it until the fifth, when Hanley Ramirez drew a one-out walk and scored after consecutive singles by Gonzalez and Kemp.
