Braves chase Latos early, pound Marlins
Apr 8, 2015 - 4:51 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrelton Simmons, Chris Johnson, Cameron Maybin and Freddie Freeman all drove in a pair of runs as Atlanta used an early burst of offense to subdue Miami by a 12-2 count on Tuesday.Nick Markakis added two hits, two runs scored and also knocked in one for the Braves, who collected 14 hits in the winning effort. Eric Young and Alberto Callaspo posted a run-scoring hit for the visitors.
Alex Wood (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking three in five innings.
Donovan Solano posted an RBI triple and Dee Gordon drove in the other run for the Marlins, who were down big before stepping to the plate.
In his Miami debut, Mat Latos (0-1) didn't make it out of the first inning, charged with seven runs on six hits while recording just two outs.
"There was a little bit of jitters," Latos said. "There's no excuse. I embarrassed myself."
Things unraveled for Latos just one batter in, as Young walked and stole second ahead of a Jace Peterson line out. He came home on a Markakis single, then Freeman brought in Markakis with a double and the latter crossed home on a Christian Bethancourt two-bagger.
Bethancourt moved to third on a wild pitch, then Kelly Johnson walked ahead of an RBI double from Chris Johnson and Simmons' run-scoring single. Wood sacrificed Simmons to second and he scored on a Young base hit.
Brad Hand came on and walked Peterson before completing the frame by grounding out Markakis.
"That wasn't what I was expecting," Wood said of the outburst. "I got an (at- bat) before I even got out there. Any time they want to do that I'm definitely alright with it."
The Marlins finally hit the scoreboard in the fifth on Solano's pinch-hit triple to knock in Adeiny Hechavarria, who came in when Gordon followed with a groundout.
Freeman doubled home Peterson in the seventh for an 8-2 score, then Callaspo and Chris Johnson added RBI hits with Maybin contributing a two-run single in the ninth.
Game Notes
Latos' ERA ballooned to a grotesque 94.50 as he set a new franchise record for shortest start by a debuting pitcher ... Michael Tejera (Sept. 8, 1999) and Logan Kensing (Sept. 10, 2004) held the mark prior as each recorded only six outs ... The Braves hit .857 against the Miami hurler in his brief stint.
