Latos makes Marlins debut vs. Braves
Apr 7, 2015 - 2:17 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Mat Latos makes his Miami Marlins debut on Tuesday when they continue a three-game season-opening series with the Atlanta Braves at Marlins Ballpark.Acquired from Cincinnati this offseason, Latos pitched well for the Reds a year ago, going 5-5 with a 3.25 ERA in 16 starts before shutting it down in September due to a bone bruise in his elbow.
When healthy Latos has been as good as any pitcher in the National League, but staying on the field has been a problem. Last year he was felled by not only a knee injury, but an elbow issue that caused him to miss the first two and a half months of the season.
Latos, who attended the Marlins' inaugural game in 1993 as a kid, has faced the Braves eight times and is 3-3 against them with a 3.28 ERA.
Atlanta, meanwhile, will turn to lefty Alex Wood, who enjoyed a breakout season for the rebuilding Braves in 2014, going 11-11 with a 2.78 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 35 games.
He has compiled a 2.84 ERA through the first 35 starts of his career.
Wood is just 2-3 lifetime versus the Marlins with a 3.76 ERA in nine games (6 starts).
Atlanta will be looking to go 2-0 after a tremendous effort from Julio Teheran in the opener. Teheran tossed six solid innings and Nick Markakis drove in both of the Braves' runs in a 2-1 triumph.
Teheran (1-0), the Braves' Opening Day starter for a second year in a row, allowed a run on eight hits for Atlanta, which dealt All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel on the eve of the season.
The team's new closer, Jason Grilli struck out two in a perfect ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Henderson Alvarez (0-1) got the Opening Day start for Miami, which is still without its ace Jose Fernandez, who continues to recover from Tommy John surgery. He surrendered two runs on six hits over seven frames in the loss.
The Marlins went 10-9 versus the Braves last season.
