Betts lifts Red Sox over Blue Jays
Apr 28, 2015 - 5:09 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mookie Betts' RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Boston Red Sox over the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game series. The Blue Jays sent Miguel Castro (0-2) to the mound in the ninth with the score tied. Xander Bogaerts and Ryan Hanigan hit consecutive one-out singles. The two runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Bogaerts scored on Betts' hit up the middle.
Betts went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Red Sox, who snapped a two- game skid and bounced back from Sunday's 18-7 loss to the Orioles. Pablo Sandoval hit a solo homer and knocked in three runs before leaving with neck soreness.
Boston starter Joe Kelly allowed five runs on five hits while striking out 10 and walking three over six innings. Alexi Ogando tossed two scoreless frames and Koji Uehara (2-1) pitched a perfect ninth.
"These guys are a very good hitting baseball team. When you don't make pitches, they make you pay for it," said Kelly.
Devon Travis hit a solo homer and drove in two runs for the Blue Jays, who have lost four in a row. Russell Martin added two RBI.
Toronto starter Aaron Sanchez gave up four runs -- three earned -- on five hits with seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
"It's tough," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "It wasn't a great lead for this ballpark. We had a nice little lead. They just kept chipping away, chipping away. They're dangerous. They got us there at the end."
Following a 33-minute rain delay, the Blue Jays scored three runs in the first. Jose Reyes singled, stole second and raced home on Travis' single to right. Josh Donaldson walked before Kelly recorded the first two outs of the game. Martin kept the inning going with a two-run double down the left-field line.
The Red Sox got two runs back in the bottom half of the frame. Dustin Pedroia walked and David Ortiz doubled to put men on second and third with one out. After Hanley Ramirez struck out swinging, Sandoval hit a two-run single to left.
Travis led off the third with a homer to left-center field.
Kevin Pillar added an RBI single in the fourth, but Sandoval answered with a solo shot in the bottom half.
Betts scored in the fifth to make it 5-4. Betts hit a two-out double and raced home when Pedroia hit a soft ground ball back to Sanchez, who made a wild throw to first.
The Red Sox tied the game in the eighth. Roberto Osuna gave up singles to Betts and Pedroia before intentionally walking Ortiz to load the bases. Ramirez then hit a line drive to left-center field, but Dalton Pompey made a diving catch. Betts tagged up and scored on the play. After Allen Craig struck out looking, Donaldson made a leaping catch at third to take a hit away from Daniel Nava.
