Brewers eye fifth straight win in middle tilt with Padres

Apr 22, 2014 - 2:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Milwaukee Brewers are working on another lengthy winning streak and shoot for a fifth straight victory Tuesday versus the San Diego Padres in the middle test of a three-game series at Miller Park.

The Brewers won nine in a row earlier this month and are coming off Monday's 4-3 decision over the Padres in the opener of a six-game, seven-day homestand.

Aramis Ramirez homered, Ryan Braun drove in a pair of runs and Scooter Gennett, Jean Segura and Elian Herrera finished with two hits apiece, as Milwaukee posted its fourth straight win and fifth in six tries.

Braun is on a six-game hitting streak and has gone 6-for-12 with two homers and six RBI over his last three contests.

Brewers starter Wily Peralta improved to 3-0 on the season and was reached for three runs, two of which were earned, and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Will Smith, Tyler Thornburg and Francisco Rodriguez combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief with Rodriguez picking up his eighth save.

"They've been unbelievable," Peralta said of the bullpen. "It's been huge for us. It's huge for me, too."

Milwaukee has the best record in baseball at 15-5 and is 11-0 when outhitting the opposition. It will also host the Chicago Cubs on the homestand.

The Brewers are still waiting to see if outfielder Carlos Gomez will be suspended after he was involved in a brawl with Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo draws the start Tuesday and has posted back- to-back no-decisions since winning his first two outings. He threw six innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts in a win over Pittsburgh on April 12, then did the same thing in an 11-2 loss last Thursday.

Gallardo walked a season-high four batters his last time out and is 2-0 with a 1.46 earned run average. In eight career meetings (4 starts) with San Diego, the right-hander has a 4-3 record to go along with a 5.04 ERA.

The Padres got a 10-game road trip off to a bad start and lost for the third time in five tries on Monday.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner had a rough outing and gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings to fall to 2-2. He struck out four batters and walked two. Cashner had a string of 11 consecutive quality starts -- tied for the longest streak in Padres history -- and had permitted two runs or fewer in 10 straight outings.

"I just didn't have my best stuff tonight, but I tried to keep us in the game," Cashner said.

Chris Denorfia homered and Yonder Alonso went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Padres.

Padres starter Ian Kennedy suffered a tough-luck loss his last time out and gets the call Tuesday. Kennedy carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of last Thursday's 3-1 loss to Colorado and eventually gave up three runs and four hits in a season-high seven innings.

Kennedy fell to 1-3 in four starts and has allowed seven runs and 12 hits over 13 innings over his last two trips to the mound. Kennedy won his only road start on April 6 at Miami and has made seven starts in his career against Milwaukee, going 2-3 with a 4.00 ERA.

The Padres went 4-3 against the Brewers last season with a 3-1 mark at Miller Park.
