Sanchez tries to find win column as Tigers battle Twins
Apr 26, 2014 - 12:13 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - In the second season of a five-year, $80 million deal with the Detroit Tigers, Anibal Sanchez has yet to record a win in 2014. The right-hander tries to change that Saturday afternoon when he takes the mound against the Minnesota Twins in the middle test of a three-game set.The 30-year-old right-hander has dropped his last two starts, including Monday's 3-1 home decision against the White Sox. Sanchez was lifted after giving up five hits and three runs in 6 1/3 frames. He carried a shutout into the seventh inning.
Sanchez is 1-2 with a 2.57 ERA in seven career starts versus Minnesota.
Phil Hughes picked up his first win of 2014 in his most recent start, Sunday at Kansas City. The righty scattered nine hits and yielded three runs over six-plus innings and departed after surrendering a two-run homer to Alcides Escobar.
In 12 career games (10 starts) against Detroit, Hughes is 5-6 with a 4.71 ERA.
Last night, Nick Castellanos belted a two-run homer and added an RBI single during a seven-run third inning, as the Tigers posted a 10-6 win.
Torii Hunter had three hits and knocked in two runs for the Tigers, while Rajai Davis finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Detroit starter Rick Porcello (3-1) was tagged for four runs on six hits in five-plus innings.
"The guys up and down the lineup drove the ball pretty well," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "Everyone contributed."
Jason Kubel went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Kurt Suzuki had two sacrifice flies for Minnesota.
The Tigers jumped on Twins starter Kevin Correia (0-3), who was victimized for eight runs -- seven earned -- on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.
"The majority of the balls they hit went the other way," said Correia, "so that'll be an adjustment I'll have to make."
Detroit was 11-8 against the Twins a year ago.
