Braves try to bounce back behind Harang in Miami
Apr 30, 2014 - 3:09 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - At least Atlanta won't have to face Jose Fernandez for the rest of this series. The Braves will try to shake off a lopsided loss to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night and draw even in this three-game series.
Atlanta was dominated once again by Fernandez in last night's opener, falling 9-0 to have a four-game winning streak stopped.
The reigning NL Rookie of the Year allowed just two hits while striking out eight over eight scoreless innings to help Miami win its fourth straight home tilt.
Fernandez was coming off one of his best outings as he fanned a career-best 14 Braves in a 1-0 win on April 22.
"We needed him to go out there and log some big innings, and that's back-to- back great starts against a great offensive team," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Fernandez.
In four career starts against Atlanta, Fernandez has surrendered just three runs on 13 hits with 35 strikeouts in 29 innings.
"Not everybody is Cy Young, and you still have to beat Cy Young every once in a while," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
In his season debut after breaking his left hand in Spring Training, Ed Lucas had three hits and drove in a run, while Giancarlo Stanton and Jarrod Saltalamacchia both homered.
Alex Wood was charged with seven runs on 10 hits over five-plus innings for Atlanta in the loss.
The Braves have a good chance to rebound tonight with Aaron Harang set to take the hill. The right-hander is off an excellent start to the season at 3-1 with an MLB-leading 0.85 earned run average. He has not allowed more than a run in any of his five outings.
Harang got a no-decision versus Miami last Wednesday despite striking out 11 batters over six innings of one-run ball. He sits 5-4 in his career against the Marlins with a 5.90 ERA.
Nathan Eovaldi also did not get a decision last Wednesday for the Marlins and counters Harang again tonight. He yielded one unearned run in last week's meeting on five hits and a walk in six innings while striking out seven.
The righty is 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA on the season and 1-1 lifetime against the Braves with a 1.88 ERA in seven meetings.
The Braves took two of three at home versus the Marlins last week and have won eight of the last 12 meetings. They won eight of 10 last season in Miami and are 15-5 all-time at Marlins Park.
