Cano, Mariners shoot for quick sweep of Yankees
May 1, 2014 - 2:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Robinson Cano's return to New York was uneventful. Now the All-Star second baseman will try to help the Seattle Mariners to a series sweep over the Yankees on Thursday, as the weather-abbreviated two-game set comes to a close at Yankee Stadium.
Wednesday's contest was postponed due to rain and will be made up on June 2.
Cano was greeted with mostly boos in his first game back in the Bronx after signing a 10-year, $240-million deal with Seattle this offseason, but it was he and the Mariners who had the last laugh, as he drove in a run and scored another in his new team's 6-3 triumph.
Cano was limited to one hit in five at-bats and struck out twice, but his new teammates picked up the slack, most notably Mike Zunino, who went 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
"You're going to get some cheers and boos. You just have to go out and play the game," Cano said.
Corey Hart knocked in a pair during a four-run fifth inning, and Chris Young (1-0) held the Yankees to two runs -- one earned -- on three hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings to earn his first win since Sept. 2, 2012.
CC Sabathia (3-3) lost to the Mariners for the first time in 10 meetings after surrendering four runs on nine hits over five-plus innings.
"I just didn't make a good pitch to Corey," Sabathia said.
Seattle now turns to rookie left-hander Roenis Elias, who is 1-2 with a 3.54 ERA. Elias had been impressive through his first three starts, but has been banged around a bit his last two times out. Elias did not get a decision on Friday against Texas, as he allowed three runs, five hits and walked three batters over 5 2/3 innings of a 6-5 win.
With the day off New York has decided to give the ball to Japanese righty Hiroki Kuroda, who is coming off an awful showing against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim his last time out. Kuroda was rocked to the tune of eight runs (6 earned) and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings, dropping him to 2-2 on the year, while raising his ERA to 5.28.
"I think he'll figure it out," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's been a little up and down [so far this season]. Tonight, he could never find it."
Kuroda has faced the Mariners five times and is 2-3 with a 3.27 ERA.
New York took four of seven from Seattle in 2013. The Mariners, though, have won three straight games at Yankee Stadium going back to last season. It's Seattle's first three-game winning streak in the Bronx since 2009-10. The Mariners haven't won four straight in New York since 2001-03 when they took six in a row at Yankee Stadium.
